The Super Soaker 50 is a pump-action air-pressurized soaker. Its water tank sits above the main soaker itself, with an orange cap on the rear of the tank.
It advertises itself as the "most powerful watergun ever" on the original packaging, claiming a firing range of up to fifty feet (fifteen meters).
History[]
The concept for the Super Soaker 50 and the brand altogether can be traced back to 1982, when US Air Force and NASA engineer Lonnie Johnson was experimenting with a heat pump and a series of tubes attached to a sink, which he believed could be translated into a water-firing toy. He filed the patent for his design two years later; in 1989, toy company Larami purchased the rights to it.
In 1990, the Power Drencher was released; it would very shortly after be renamed to Super Soaker to avoid copyright troubles with another toy brand. This name would stick and be used for the rest of the Super Soaker brand going forward, especially as the success of the Super Soaker 50 gave way to more soakers being produced.
The Super Soaker 50 would be re-released a number of times, most re-releases coinciding with celebrating its success. In 1992, it would be properly re-released under the Classic Super Soaker series with an altered design. A more true-to-the-original re-release came in 1998 for the 10th anniversary of the Super Soaker brand, with a special chrome color scheme. In 2009, Hasbro re-released it to commemorate the 20th anniversary, with changes to performance. In 2019 it would be re-released under the Nerf brand as a part of a collaboration with Supreme.
World's Smallest has also made a working miniature version of the Super Soaker 50.
